After approval, the engine or any parts relevant to the warranty claim must be shipped to the Duramax shop at the purchaser's expense. Duramax shop will specify which parts need to be returned based on the Warranty Claim Form. A comprehensive investigation will be conducted by the Duramax shop to identify the cause of the failure.
No warranty claims will be considered if there is an outstanding balance or any unreturned cores. The purchaser must complete and submit all necessary paperwork before the warranty claim can be processed.
Breaking In Remanufactured Engines
In order for piston rings to sit properly, engines must be properly broken in. Oil consumption issues might arise if an engine is not properly broken in. Piston rings are made to exert a specific tangential force. Compression rings rely on increased combustion pressures to push them outward towards the cylinder wall and down towards the bottom of the piston's ring lands. These rings won't seat or seal properly without this combustion force. Oil film is left on the cylinder wall to lubricate the oil control rings to control the compression rings. Each compression ring removes a small quantity of oil film for proper oil control.
While piston rings can seat without the aid of a dynamometer, a sufficient load on the engine is necessary to provide sufficient combustion pressure and temperature for the rings to seat. This procedure is very important within several hours of the engine's new service life. Not enough combustion pressure will be produced by idling, revving up, or pulling low loads to seat new rings.
According to research, the best results for getting piston rings to the seat are obtained by reducing idle time and running a freshly remanufactured engine at 75% of full load for the first three to four hours. All manufacturers agree that after initial start-up and tests are finished, adding a load to the engine is essential for seating the rings, even though the load and duration vary depending on the manufacturer. Oil consumption may rise as a result of delaying the load process.
NOTICE: Approved Lubricants
The performance of the piston rings can be impacted by the kind, brand, classification, and oil grade utilized during the engine break-in phase. It is preferable to use an OEM-recommended oil. Only use break-in oils and additives in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Pre-Ignition/Pre-Installation Engine Procedures
- Fill the engine with new oil.
- Perform the priming procedure, and if you require technical assistance, please contact us at +1 (404) 905-5524.
- Inspect the front and rear crank seals to ensure that they are in good condition.
- Verify that the turbo unit is clear, clean, and in good working order. Failure to perform this step may result in engine damage due to oil flow back containing broken fragments.
- The radiator must undergo a flow check and be repaired as needed.
- Replace the oil cooler and oil lines to prevent engine damage from fragments in the oil from the cooler and lines.

Diesel Long Block Core Return / Charge and Purchase Process
Below is a comprehensive outline of our core return criteria and the diesel long block core return process.
Core Return Criteria:
- A long block core that is returned with a broken crankshaft, broken connecting rod, broken camshaft, or broken valve will be deemed an unacceptable core and a core charge will be billed.
- A long block core that is returned with a visible hole/crack in the block or cylinder head will be considered an unacceptable core and a core charge will be billed.
- An unassembled, incomplete, or long block core that cannot rotate 360 degrees will be deemed an unacceptable core and a core charge will be billed.
- Any core that is returned but considered unacceptable will be subject to a 50% to 100% core charge.
- Any core that is not returned will result in a 100% core charge, and your warranty will be void.
- We have up to 90 days to complete the core inspection from the time of return and process any applicable fees.
PRIOR TO RETURNING THE CORE, PLEASE INSPECT THE CORE TO AVOID ANY UNFORESEEN CHARGES. CORE ENGINES RETURNED AFTER THE SPECIFIED THIRTY (30) DAYS MAY BE SUBJECT TO A LATE CORE RETURN FEE OF 20%.
NO REFUNDS WILL BE OFFERED FOR CORE RETURNS AFTER 90 DAYS FROM DELIVERY.
Diesel Long Block Core Return / Charge and Purchase Process:
Step 1: Receiving
We will ship the long block via truck freight to the address provided on the order form. For optimal delivery, we recommend shipping to a commercial business address with 9-5 Monday thru Friday business hours. The long block engine will need to be unloaded with a forklift or loading dock.
Delivery services are available for limited-access locations such as a church, schools, farms, at-home businesses, or residences. Additional freight charges will apply for these types of deliveries.
Locations without a forklift or loading dock will require a lift gate-equipped truck to deliver their long block, and this can be arranged for an additional fee.
Please note that a 20% restocking fee will apply for any engine that is returned before installation, and a 5% service charge will apply for any order that is canceled by the customer prior to engine shipment.
Step 2: Unwrapping and Inspection
Upon receiving the long block, you will need to unwrap the engine and conduct a side-by-side comparison of the new engine and the one you removed from your vehicle or equipment.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the long block we ship you is VISIBLY the same as the long block that is being replaced. Check the bolt-hole locations, branch tube design, gear-train housing style, etc., BEFORE any parts are installed. We ship you a long block for the engine serial number or VIN you provide, but a VISUAL check is always best.
Step 3: Transfer Parts
After verifying that you have received the correct long block, you can begin transferring the parts from your old engine. You will be shipped a gasket set which will include most of the necessary gaskets for engine installation. You will be responsible for supplying any additional gaskets for the installation that are not included with the long block.
Step 4: Install New Engine
You will receive an envelope with your new long block which will include warranty and core return documents. It is the customer's responsibility to review all the paperwork received with the shipment. Our installation instructions only cover the main mistakes made during installation. Refer to an OEM service manual for installation procedures. Additionally, ensure the installer is highly knowledgeable.
Step 5: Return the Core
When returning the long block core, you must ensure that it is returned in the same manner as the remanufactured long block you received. If the long block was shipped in our wood crate, you must strap the core back into the crate and screw the top back into place. You should attach the return shipping label provided by our core department to the core and call to schedule a pick-up time that is convenient for you. Our core department will provide you with two copies of the return shipping documents, one of which must be given to the driver, while the other should be retained for your records.
Please note that if you fail to attach the copy of the warranty complaint as a packing slip with the engine shipment, there may be a delay in processing.
